BirdLife Melbourne is the local branch of BirdLife Melbourne, the nation’s largest conservation organization dedicated to protecting native birds and their habitats.
We are a passionate community of bird watchers, conservationists, researchers, and photographers from across metropolitan Melbourne and beyond. We believe that by understanding, enjoying, and protecting the magnificent birdlife in our region, we can contribute to the global mission of halting biodiversity loss and restoring ecosystems—because when we save birds, we save life.
Our Mission
Our mission is to foster a deep appreciation and understanding of the unique birdlife found in and around Melbourne, and to drive on-the-ground conservation action to secure their future.
What We Do
BirdLife Melbourne is actively involved in a wide range of activities that serve both conservation and community engagement:
- Birdwatching Outings: We host a variety of field trips to fantastic birding sites throughout the Melbourne area and greater Victoria, offering members and visitors the chance to see diverse species and share knowledge.
- Citizen Science & Surveys: Our members regularly participate in crucial monitoring efforts, including standardised monthly surveys of urban wetlands in the Dandenong Valley Catchment and ongoing monitoring walks at the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. This data is vital for conservation planning.
- Education and Awareness: We work to increase the public’s knowledge of native birds, their habitat requirements, and the important conservation issues they face through talks, resources, and our blog.
- Monthly Meetings: Join us for our regular monthly meetings (on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except December) featuring engaging guest speakers on a variety of ornithological and conservation topics.
- Photography Group: Our dedicated BirdLife Melbourne Photography Group holds regular outings, bringing together members who love to capture the beauty of our local birdlife.
Every photo you see on this website is generously contributed by a BirdLife Melbourne member, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication within our community.
